Pool Pump Size Guide

Choosing the correct pool pump depends on pool size, plumbing size, and system features (heater, spa, water features, etc.). Bigger is not always better – an oversized pump wastes energy and can damage equipment.

Determine Your Pool Size

Rectangular Pool
Length × Width × Average Depth × 7.5 = Gallons

Round Pool
Diameter × Diameter × Average Depth × 5.9 = Gallons

Recommended Pump Size by Pool Volume

Pool Size (Gallons) Typical Pump Size
Up to 10,000 3/4 HP – 1 HP
10,000 – 20,000 1 HP – 1 1/2 HP
20,000 – 30,000 1 1/2 HP – 2 HP
30,000 – 40,000 2 HP – 2 1/2 HP
40,000+ 2 1/2 HP – 3 HP

⚠️ Note: Modern variable-speed pumps often replace larger single-speed pumps at lower HP ratings due to higher efficiency.

Plumbing Size Matters (Very Important)

Pipe Size Recommended Max
1 1/2″ PVC Up to 1 1/2 HP
2″ PVC Up to 3 HP
2 1/2 – 3″ PVC 3HP +

Oversizing a pump on small plumbing can cause:

  • Excessive noise
  • Poor filtration
  • Heater & filter damage

Pump Type Comparison

Single-Speed Pumps

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Higher electricity usage
  • Becoming obsolete in many states

Best for: Basic systems, budget replacements

Dual-Speed Pumps

  • High & low speed operation
  • Lower energy cost than single-speed

Best for: Simple upgrades where VS is not required

Variable-Speed Pumps (Recommended)

  • Most energy efficient
  • Quiet operation
  • Programmable speeds
  • Often utility rebate eligible

Best for: Nearly all residential pools

???? A 1.65–2.7 THP variable-speed pump can replace most 1 1/2 – 3 HP single-speed pumps.

Systems That Require a Larger Pump

You may need a larger pump if your pool has:

  • Spa spillover
  • Waterfalls or deck jets
  • Solar heating
  • In-floor cleaning system
  • Long plumbing runs

Common Sizing Mistakes

❌ Choosing HP only (ignore flow & plumbing)
❌ Oversizing “just to be safe”
❌ Ignoring filter and heater flow limits

✅ Always size for flow rate (GPM), not just horsepower.

Still Not Sure?

If you’re replacing an existing pump, check the motor label for:

  • HP
  • THP (Total Horsepower)
  • Voltage
  • Plumbing size

VARIABLE SPEED POOL PUMP WITH BUILT-IN SAFETY SYSTEM

IntelliFlo pumps combine variable speed technology, onboard digital intelligence and permanent magnet motors (used in hybrid cars) to reduce pump-related energy costs by up to 90%*. The IntelliFlo VS+SVRS pump models were the first swimming pool pumps to feature a built-in Safety Vacuum Release System that detects drain blockage and automatically shuts the pump off.

  • Ability to program exact pump speeds for specific operations – filtering, heating, cleaning, spa jets, water features and more
  • SVRS complies with Virginia Graeme Baker Safety Act
  • Built-in diagnostics protect the IntelliFlo pump from the most common causes of premature failure – overheating, freezing, and voltage irregularities.
  • Includes priming protection. No SVRS calibrations needed. Built-in SVRS cannot be turned off.
  • Safety lock-out feature (password protected) prevents pump speed settings from being changed by unauthorized personnel
  • Ability to set minimum and maximum speeds so pump will only operate within the ranges set to help assure safe operation and long life
  • Compatible with Pentair Automation Systems
  • Compliant with the current ASME A112.19.17 Standard for Safety Vacuum Release Systems (SVRS)
  • Operates seamlessly on 50 hz or 60 hz input power. Flow/speed are constant when operating on 50hz or 60 hz.
  • WEF 6.9 THP 3.95

PRODUCT COMPONENTS

  • Safety lock-out feature (password protected) prevents settings from being changed by anyone but you
  • Display indicates when SVRS mode is activated
  • Function buttons to set speeds for separate operations—filtration cycles, spas, cleaners, water features and more
  • Alarm status light alerts you of conditions that may need attention (messages appear on LED display)
  • Quick Clean button is used to start filter backwashing or vacuum cycles—at the optimum flow required
  • Time Out button allows you to interrupt programmed schedules, as needed, for a period you specify—schedules automatically resume after the “time out” period ends

LONGER LIFE

The IntelliFlo pump’s advanced motor produces far less heat and vibration than a traditional induction motor, meaning less stress and wear on pump components. It also eases the strain on other equipment. Built-in diagnostics protect this variable speed pool pump from the most common causes of premature failure, resulting in dramatically longer life and an even greater return on your investment.

ENHANCED PERFORMANCE OF WATER QUALITY SYSTEMS

By running at slower speeds for longer periods, the IntelliFlo VS+SVRS pool pump makes your filter more effective, because it has more time to strip particles from water, plus small particles aren’t forced through the filter media. Automatic chemical dispensers and chlorinators are more effective when water keeps moving, too.

MANAGE WATER FEATURES

The IntelliFlo pump also gives you the ability to alter the performance of your water features. Add height to deck jets or fountains. Increase or decrease the flow to waterfalls or a vanishing edge. No other pump allows you to adjust these features on demand to change the sights and sounds of your poolscape with the push of a button.

AUTOMATION READY

Combine an IntelliTouch®, EasyTouch® or SunTouch® Control System with your IntelliFlo VS+SVRS pool pump to further enhance pool equipment performance and operating convenience. And now, new ScreenLogic® Interface software is available to allow control access from your iPad®, iPhone®, iPod touch® mobile digital device or Android® device.
